Notes & Comments
Dear Sirs, I have recently heard in the news that since October the 1st 2007 it is illegal to sell tobacco to young people under 18. In the official text in your website, though, this age is given as 16. Could you please instruct me on the contradictive moment? Ulia S.
Starting October 1, it is no longer legal to sell tobacco to people younger than 18... Read more
Thank you Kiyoko for noticing a mistake in our database. The question about the ethnic minority has been corrected.
Hi, I was doing the practice questions yesterday (and thank you very much for putting these online - it was very helpful) and noticed a mistake. In one question it asked if all overseas driver's licences expired after 12 months (or words to that effect). My understanding is that licences from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the EU were valid indefinitely in the UK. So if my memory of the question is correct, it is true for *most* overseas licences but not for *all* of them. Also, there was a question about the difference between a covering letter and an application letter where one the answers (the correct one) went along the lines of 'a covering letter is this as opposed to a covering letter which is that' instead of saying that 'a covering letter is this as opposed to an application letter which is that'. I hope this is helpful. Thanks again,

Mark.

There is a mistake in the answer about covering letter. /.../The correct answer doesn’t make sense. Please correct!
Daniela
Thanks Daniela and Mark for noticing these errors, which have been corrected now!

I am preparing the Life in the UK test. The study book are: Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship by Great Britain. Home Office Life in the UK Test: Practice Questions: Questions and Answers for British Citizenship and Settlement Tests by Henry Dillon (Paperback - 20 April 2007) Life in the UK Test - Study Guide: The Essential Study Guide for the Life in the UK Test (Study Guide) by Henry Dillon (Paperback - 18 May 2007).
Question 1: The third question of test 4 on the book 3: What is the minimum age for buying tobacco?
A 14 years old B 16 years old C 18 years old D 21 years old
The answer is B. But in book 1, page 31, said “from 10 Oct. 2007 it is illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under 18 years old.”
My question is: Why the answer is not C? In my understanding C is correct.
There is the same question in book 2. The answer is B as well.
Question 2: The question 24 in the book 3: What is the youngest legal age for children to do paid job: A 10 years old B 12 years old C 14 years old D 8 years old.
The answer is C. But in book 1, page 81, said “The earliest legal age for children to do paid work is 13.” In the book 1, page 31, write “There are laws about when children can take up paid work (usually not before 14).”
Why the age is not consistent? Which is correct? I am looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much for your help. Best regards, Z.C.
